Local Elections 2018 – Councillor Candidates Pledge to Campaign against Brexit

Local elections are a vital part of our democracy. The party that governs from each Town Hall makes wide-ranging policy and spending choices - and these choices impact often the most vulnerable in our communities.

Concerned for our communities and as passionate Europeans, our branch of the European Movement in Hammersmith, Kensington, Chelsea & Fulham has asked all candidates to take a stand and actively campaign to oppose Brexit. It is not a done deal nor is it too late.

We do not advocate using the forthcoming local elections as a protest vote.
We have seen only too well what can happen when people want to protest but don’t really want the consequences of that vote.

As a cross party group we are not telling or guiding people who to vote for. Voters will make their own minds up about who will run their authority in accordance with values they wish to see enacted and who stands the best chance of winning so those priorities can be made real. But we would ask passionate pro-Europeans like ourselves to consider the stance of the candidates as one factor when they cast their vote.

Our pledge:

"69% of voters in K&C and 70% of voters in H&F voted to Remain in the 2016 referendum.  Brexit will be highly damaging to our community and I believe to the UK as whole.  If elected as a local councillor I will support the campaign to Stop Brexit and work to ensure that the UK remains a full member of the European Union."

We wrote to the leaders of all the major parties with candidates in RBKC on 16 March asking them if they were willing to sign the pledge. Parties and candidates that replied yes are shown in the candidate lists by borough. Some parties/individual candidates are not willing to commit to the pledge and have been marked as ‘No’

The Conservative Group in K&C did not respond.  Their candidates have been marked as ‘No response’.  UKIP and independent candidates were not contacted.

Those that have incorporated our pledge in to their wider manifesto and those that have declined or not responded are listed by Ward below.
